0Margaret Dunstone
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Margaret Dunstone, a lifelong Barnsley FC fan and tireless advocate for the rights of disabled supporters. Margaret’s unwavering dedication to improving accessibility and inclusivity at Oakwell will be remembered for generations.
Her contributions began in 1984/85, when she played an integral role in the fundraising and management of the original disabled stand, which became a model for other football clubs. Her work continued in 1996/97 with the development of the South Stand (Ponte End), where she ensured that the raised disabled section provided unobstructed views, following the recommendations of the Taylor Report. Margaret’s commitment didn’t stop there; she was instrumental in developing the North Stand, advocating for replacing the original disabled stand and improving viewing platforms for home and away disabled supporters.
For over 30 years, Margaret, alongside Joan Dawson, devoted herself entirely to serving disabled fans. They organized events, sponsored shirts annually, and fostered a sense of community among disabled supporters. Even as her health declined, Margaret’s loyalty to Barnsley FC never wavered. She attended games until her retirement in 2016/17, always championing the rights and comfort of disabled fans.
Margaret’s passing leaves an immense void in the disabled stand and the hearts of everyone at Barnsley FC. Her dedication, passion, and positivity will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Margaret.
Once a Red, always a Red.
